WHITWELL & DISTRICT WI

We meet every second Monday in the month at Whitwell Community Centre at 7pm.  At each meeting there is either a talk on an interesting topic or an organised activity, followed by a cup of tea/coffee and social time.  We also organise theatre trips and other outings.  New members are always warmly welcomed and can come along for up to three meetings as a visitor before deciding whether or not to join the WI.

ABOUT THE WI

The Women’s Institute plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.  It was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation’s aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. In 2015 the WI celebrated its centenary and currently has approximately 220,000 members in around 6,300 WIs.

MEMBERSHIP FEE

The annual membership fee runs runs from April to March for which the 2021 cost will be £44, however new members joining between July and March pay a reduced pro rata amount. Your subscription will give you 11 ‘paid for’ meetings a year (the 12th meeting is the Christmas Party for which we ask for a donation) and eight copies of the WI magazine, WI Life, which is posted to your home address.  The subscription rate is set by the National Federation and increases are always kept to a minimum.

DFWI – DERBYSHIRE FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

We are affiliated to the Derbyshire Federation which is run by a Board of Trustees and its various committees and is responsible for disseminating procedures, directives and information from the National Federation and running the organisation at county level.  The headquarters are at Derbyshire House in Derby where many courses and events are also held.

SPRING COUNCIL AND AUTUMN COUNCIL FEDERATION MEETINGS

The DFWI holds two Federation Meetings each year.  The Annual Council meeting is usually held at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield in March and the Autumn Federation meeting is held in the Derby area in October.  Both are held at large venues to accommodate the many members who want to attend and they are ideal opportunities to  keep abreast of Derbyshire Federation matters and listen to inspirational speakers.

NFWI – NATIONAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

The headquarters of the National Federation are based in London.  The Board of Trustees and a team of paid staff administer the WI’s finances, organise national events and competitions and disseminate important information such as the WI’s Constitution, its aims and charitable objectives.

NFWI ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The NFWI Annual General Meeting is an important event on the WI Calendar.  The venue changes each year to ensure that as many members as possible throughout the country have the opportunity to attend.  It is a unique opportunity for members countrywide to meet and share experiences and ideas. This is the meeting where we vote as Institutes on resolutions submitted for consideration during the year and it is our opportunity to have our voices heard.  In addition, there are always inspiring speakers so it is an event not to be missed!
