WHITWELL & DISTRICT WI
Come along and join like-minded women and share in fellowship and interesting conversation at this established Women’s Institute.
We meet every second Monday in the month at Whitwell Community Centre at 7pm. At each meeting there is either a talk on an interesting topic or an organised activity, followed by a cup of tea and chat. We also organise outings together with other WIs in the area.
New members are always warmly welcomed and can come along for up to three meetings as a visitor before deciding to join the WI.

About the WI
The Women’s Institute plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
It was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation’s aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. Last year the WI celebrated its centenary and currently has approximately 212,000 members in around 6,600 WIs.
De Rodes Group of WIs
Whitwell & District WI is part of the De Rodes Group of WIs which consists of Whitwell & District, Whittington, Woodthorpe (Staveley), Barlborough & Clowne, Chesterfield Town and Bolsover. By pooling resources we can offer activities which might be too expensive for one Institute to provide on its own. Each Institute takes turns to be the host group for one year which includes the Christmas Carol Service in December and the Group Social, usually in April.
DFWI – Derbyshire Federation of Women’s Institutes www.thewi.org.uk/derbyshire
We are affiliated to the Derbyshire Federation which is run by a Board of Trustees and its various committees and is responsible for disseminating procedures, directives and information from the National Federation and running the organisation at county level. The headquarters are at Derbyshire House in Derby where many courses and events are also held. With the exception of three paid administrators, all personnel at Derbyshire House are volunteers.
Spring Council and Autumn Council Federation Meetings
The DFWI holds two Federation Meetings each year. The Annual Council meeting is usually held at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield in March and the Autumn Federation meeting is held in Derby in October. Both are held at large venues to accommodate the many members who want to attend and they are ideal opportunities to keep abreast of Derbyshire Federation matters and listen to well known and inspirational speakers.
NFWI – National Federation of Women’s Institutes www.thewi.org.uk
The headquarters of the National Federation are based in London. The Board of Trustees and a team of paid staff administer the WI’s finances, organise national events and competitions and disseminate important information such as the WI’s Constitution, its aims and charitable objectives.
NFWI Annual General Meeting
Held in June each year, the NFWI Annual General Meeting is an important event on the WI Calendar. The venue changes each year to ensure that as many members as possible throughout the country have the opportunity to attend. The 2013 AGM was held in Cardiff, the 2014 AGM was in Leeds and the 2015 Centenary AGM was held at the Albert Hall in London. The 2016 AGM will be held in Brighton. It is a wonderful opportunity for members countrywide to meet and share experiences and ideas. This is the meeting where we vote as Institutes on resolutions submitted for consideration during the year and it is our opportunity to have our voices heard. In addition there are usually excellent speakers so it is an event not to be missed!
Denman College www.denmancollege.org.uk
Set in beautiful surroundings in Oxfordshire, Denman is the WI’s very own college with excellent accommodation and top class teaching facilities. Members and friends can attend a wide variety of courses which include international cuisine, every sort of craft, lifestyle and wellness, and historical studies. Ask your WI Secretary for the current brochure or look on the Denman website. Also look out for the Derbyshire Federation weekend when a variety of courses are organised for Derbyshire members only – a great way to meet other members from Derbyshire! Our WI offers a bursary each year to help towards the cost of attending a course at Denman.
The annual membership fee runs from January to December for which the 2016 cost is £37.50, however new members joining between April and June only pay £28.10, those joining between July and September only pay £18.75 and those joining between October and December only pay £9.40. Your subscription will give you 11 meetings a year and 8 copies of the WI magazine WI Life which is posted to your home address. The subscription rate is set by the National Federation and increases are always kept to a minimum
