2012 Christmas Lights Parade

To celebrate the turning on of the Whitwell Christmas lights for 2012 we once again held our popular Christmas Lights parade; Stopping for carols around various parts of the village.

Fortunately this year we didn’t have any rain, and even though it was a bit cold a good number of you turned out and we thank you for that.

After the carols we all went back to the community centre to warm up with some mulled wine and mince pies as well as more Christmas tunes from the brass band and also some songs from Whitwell Players’ performance of Scrooge.

Whitwell Needs You!

Whitwell needs your help, or rather our younger residents do.  Whitwell has been without a Youth Club for a number of years and a dedicated group of people are trying to change that and they need your help.

A lot of the time consuming work has already been done, a committee is in place along with a constitution and a bank account.  Funding has already been applied for as well.  The only thing missing right now are volunteers to help run it and keep an eye on things.

It’s not going to be a completely structured club, it won’t be all planned activities requiring a huge amount of your time.  The plan is to run a “drop-in” style club where our young people can socialise in the dry out of the cold, get a hot drink and a snack with a bit of light supervision.

The plan is for the club to run on Tuesday evenings between 18:00 and 20:30 (ish) at Bakestone Moor Community Hall (Friendship Hall)

Volunteers will need a CRB check, but this can be arranged or if you chose then you can do the Volunteer Passport which includes training around volunteering, first aid etc.

To sign up you’ll need a form from the community centre.

Community Centre Mangement – AGM

The AGM for the Whitwell Community Centre Management Committee will be held at the Community Centre on Thursday 26th July at 7:30PM in the Meeting Room.

All residents of the parish are welcome to attend (as they are at the monthly committee meetings).

The AGM will see the audited accounts for the 2011/2012 year presented as well as nominations for the user group representatives (6 required) and individual representatives (4 required).

We encourage anyone with an interest in how the Community Centres are run to attend.

The Agenda can be found here: AGM agenda 26.07.12

Gala 2012 – Photo Competition; Entries & Winners

After a brief scare shortly before the deadline that no one was going to enter we were inundated with entries for the photography competition this year, which is exactly what we were hoping for.

Our youngest known entrant was just 10 years old and scooped 2nd prize in the Wildlife & Animals category.

Congratulations to our winners and well done to everyone else who entered – maybe next year will be your year.

The Winners

Scenic

  1. Norman Daniels
  2. Steven Hough
  3. Norman Daniels

Wildlife / Animals

  1. Steven Greaves
  2. Eleanor Clay
  3. Karl Austin

Unfortunately we don’t have copies of all of the entries, we’re missing the winners from the Scenic category mostly – If you’re one of our winners and you’d like to see your photo up here then please let us know how we can get a copy.

We’ve tried to present the images as un-altered as possible, although they were scanned in from the prints (with the exception of a couple in digital format that we had) and the scanning software did make automatic adjustments on some.

Gala 2012 – Photographs

Despite the change of venue and the odd downpour spirits weren't dampened and the 2012 Gala was one of the best we can remember.  Here we have a selection of photos from the day.

Gala 2012 – Venue Change

Due to the lovely British summer weather we're having the 2012 Whitwell Gala will now be held at the Community Centre instead.  We've inspected the recreation ground today and it's just too wet to be safe.

Unfortunately it does mean one of the displays we had planned won't go ahead – hopefully we'll keep that back as a surprise for next year instead :)

Savage Skills will still be performing their shows and we'll still have all the other stalls and displays.

We'd appreciate it if you could please tell all your friends and neighbours that the Gala has been moved.

Thank you,

Tim & Team

Gala 2012 – Photo Competition

After the success of last years photo competition at the Gala we'll be running it again, although with a few small changes.

This year the two categories will be:

  • Scenic
  • Animals/Wildlife

We've done away with the age based categories this time and brought in a couple of small rules:

  • Maximum of 3 entries per person, per category.
  • Prints can be a maximum of 10" x 8"

If you'd like to enter then you need to take your entries down to the Community Centre by Thursday 12th July 2012.  The winners will be judged on the day and featured on our website after the Gala.

Good luck, happy “snapping” and we’ll leave you with last years 1st place entry, “Brian” the snail (from Whitwell).

Whitwell Gala 2012 – A Sneak Peak

It might be Valentine’s Day today, but it's also only 5 months to go until this year’s Whitwell Gala on the recreation ground.

We've got a number of new things planned for this year, along with some of our old favourites, so we thought we'd give you a sneak peak of one of our main attractions this year.

To entertain children and adults alike we've got the fantastic Savage Skills mountain bike display team performing shows throughout the afternoon.  They'll be demonstrating their gravity defying tricks and stunts for your entertainment.  To get an idea of just how good they are, have a look at the video below.

We hope that has wetted your appetite for this year’s Gala, stay tuned for more news over the coming months – and remember, “don’t try this at home”
